Fall 2011 Play-off Champs

The CC45+ Grey Team won the 2011 Fall Season Play-off's on Thursday night at the Cape Coral Sports Complex.

They started the night by building a 13-4 lead over Southern Trust Auto in the semi-finals. They then had to hold off a big rally by Southern to win 14-11.

In the finals they beat Piney Road Automotive (who knocked regular season champs Fuller/Metz out of the play-offs in their semi-final) with a 13-12 win.

They won the final in dramatic fashion. They went into the 7th inning tied 12-12 and held Piney to 0 runs. In the bottom of the seventh Sante Cacciola led off with a triple and then was driven home on a single by Len Elliot for the win.

November Bracket Champions

The Fifty Calibers won their bracket in the November Florida Half Century Softball Tournament this past week-end. The tourney held in Auburndale was a warm-up for the State Tournament which will be held in Tampa Dec. 10-11.

Draft Set for Tuesday Sept. 27

The Draft for the up-coming season will be held Tuesday (Sept, 27th) at The Hangout, 627 Cape Coral Parkway W (Cape Coral Pkwy and Skyline). The draft will start approx 6:30. All managers and thier advisors should be there by 6:15.

Before the draft a try-out evaluation practice will be held for any new players at BMX Fields Skyline and Trafalgar (just northeast). All managers are encouraged to attend. All new players who have never played in the league are required to attend. At this time we have no one trying out. If you are a new player wanting to play this season you should contact me- Bob Schafer at 239-292-6733 by 1200 pm tomorrow (Tues). If I don't hear from any new players by that time, we will cancel the practice. For weather related questions contact me.

On Tuesday night Fuller/Metz proved to be the best of the bunch as they easily defeated CC45+ and Southern Trust Auto to win the Summer Play-off Championships.

The regular season ended with a big crowd at the top of the league standings. The top 4 teams all had 6 wins. So it came down to percentage points. On Tuesday Fuller removed all doubt with two convincing wins. With the Championship, Fuller returned to the top tier team it was several years ago when Tom Pacil was the manager.

In the semi's Southern beat Piney Road with a big comeback. Southern (playing without vacationing Nick Potts and injured Ed Duffy) trailed by as many as 8 runs early on. In the bottom of the 4th they mounted a furious comeback and then won going away. All season Piney was afflicted by their tendency to score big early then trying to hold on till the end. That proved to be their undoing on Tuesday. Randu Collins led Southern with some timely hitting and by playing out of position in right-center. He fielded every oppurtunity and even threw out a runner at third when Piney was climbing back into the game.

In the other semi-final CC45+ never got on track and Fuller paid them back for the beat-down that CC45+ gave them last Thursday in their season finale. CC45+ has been hurting since they lost Brian Bartlett who went AWOL for unknown reasons several weeks ago. Fuller was led by the hitting of Gary Wright and Mark Ridenour and the slick fielding of Guy Gewinner and Rich Jones.

The draft for the Summer Season 2011 was held on Thursday evening at the Clubhouse Grill. All players should be contacted by telephone by their respective managers. There were 55 players eligible for the draft to make 5 teams of 11 players.

The games this season will be held at the Cape Coral Sport's Complex (Trafalgar and Sands). There will be one early game at 6:45 and two late games at 8:00. You will play a double header every 4th game. You will be scheduled for 16 games each.

The draft for the up-coming fall season will be held at the Clubhouse Grille (see link on right) tonight (Thursday) starting at 6:45.

All league players are invited to join the managers and board members after the draft about 7:45 - 8:00 for beers and debate about who's the team to beat.

The managers will be calling players on their respective teams over the next few days to inform them of their new teams. All team rosters will be posted on this site on Friday by noon.

All managers wanting to preview a full roster of players eligible for the draft can stop by Gary Wrights shop (Bills 1/2 Price Bedding) on Del Prado in Cape Coral after 10 am today. Also I will be at the Clubhouse by 5:45 with the draft list.

The Summer Play-offs were full of upsets and surprises as usual. Since the current play-off system has been in place the regular season champs have also won the play-offs only once. This season was no different as regular season champs Sluggers Pizza lost to 4th seed Fuller/Metz Funeral in the opening round. Fuller /Metz was making its first trip to the play-offs since the new format was initiated. They were impressive with good hitting backed by a tough defense.

In the other bracket 3rd seed Piney Road Automotive beat 2nd seed Southern Trust Auto to make the play-off finals for the second season in a row. Pat Emmanuel led the attack for Piney with a bases loaded triple to nail the coffin shut on a feisty Southern Trust team who had to play without their star shortstop Mark Ridenour (back injury).

And for the second season in a row Piney won the Championship with a victory over Fuller/Metz in the finals. The final game was a close contest as Piney and Fuller went to last inning tied at 4-4. Fuller loaded the bases in the top of the seventh with no outs but was unable to score.

In the bottom of the 7th Piney's Jim Goldsmith led off by hitting a hot shot at Fuller 3rd baseman Ed Duffy who made a nice snag but his throw to first was in the dirt and Goldsmith ended up on third. Fuller intentionally walked the next two batters to load the bases and create the force at home. The next batter hit a slow roller towards first and Goldsmith just beat the throw to seal the victory for Piney.

In other softball news 50 Caliber Softball (formerly Classics Logo's) won their bracket in the Florida Half Century 50's division tournament this month.

50 Cal. went 4-0 for the tourney to earn 8 points in the standings.Mark Ridenour was given the plaque for MVP after hitting 7 home runs over the two days.

This was a big victory for 50 Cal. as it was their first tournament after the upheaval caused by the sudden departure of long time sponsor Jerry Roberts. They didn't miss a beat and new co-managers Joe Vinski and Steve Brennan were more than up to the task of leading the team.

Play-off Results

Thursday night the winter season play-offs were held at the sports complex and a large crowd was treated to 3 great games- including an extra inning in the championship game.

In the first game Piney Road Automotive beat Clubhouse Grille 7-6. Piney was led by Larry Hildreth who hit a 3 run inside the park homer plus some slick fielding by Dave Dinkins.

Game 2 ended with the same 7-6 score as Southern Trust Auto beat Scappa Urology. Randoo went 4-4 for Southern in the victory.

The championship game was also close. Piney (the odds on favorite according to 'handi-capper' Craig Simonson) rallied in the 8th inning. Southern battled the whole game but couldn't match the 4 runs put up by Piney in the 8th.

The Fall/Winter Board Meeting was held Monday evening Dec. 6th at the Clubhouse Grille.

The first order of business was the retirement of President Mike Weaver. Mike has done a great job as President and put in many hours of hard work for the league. We all owe him a big 'thank you' for his years of service.

Secondly; we would like to welcome Joe Vinski to the Board to take Mike's place. Joe brings a lot of energy and leadership and is an excellent addition.

Mark Ridenour was then elected as the new Board President. Bob Schafer remains secretary and John Svidron treasurer.

The only rule changes were: any team needing pool players will be allowed to draw a max. of 3 players. This means a team that has the minimum 6 (needed to play) will be allowed to draw only three and will have to play with 9. This should be less of a problem this season as all teams have 11 players. The pool players can only be placed at catcher, first base and/or right field. They must also bat last.

WINTER DRAFT 2011

The Draft for the Winter 2011 Season was held on Thursday night at the ClubHouse Grille. A random draw was held earlier to determine the draft order and Gary 'I should buy a lottery ticket' Wright drew the number 1.

Actually, I would like to thank Gary and Joe Vinski for stepping up to manage at the last minute. These kind of guys are what makes this league the success that it is. We always need guys who are willing to manage. Anyone who's been in the league for 3-4 seasons should know the players well enough to pick a team. If you want our league to succeed, you need to step up and get involved. Manage a team , find a sponsor, recruit new players, etc. etc. Do you have an idea to make the league better? Contact a Board Member (or leave a message on this site). We are always looking for new ideas.

On Thursday night, August 12th, SellState Realty won the Summer Season II Play-off Championship with a hard fought victory over Robbie Saunders' Southern Trust Auto team. This close contest was back and forth till a big 6 run rally in the 6th inning put it away for SellState. SellState was led all season by the hitting of Bill Lowande and the slick fielding of shortstop Pat Sullivan.

In the earlier elimination games, SellState defeated Gary Wrights scrappy Morgan Auto team and Southern Trust romped over Mark Ridenours under-achieving Scappa Urology team.

Softball and Wives

It is important for men to remember that, as women grow older, it becomes harder for them to maintain the same quality of housekeeping as when they were younger. When you notice this, try not to yell at them. Some are oversensitive, and there's nothing worse than an oversensitive woman.
My name is Pat. Let me relate how I handled the situation with my wife, Donna. When I retired a few years ago, it became necessary for Donna to get a full-time job, along with her part-time job, both for extra income and for the health benefits that we needed. Shortly after she started working, I noticed she was beginning to show her age. I usually get home from my softball game about the same time she gets home from work.
Although she knows how hungry I am, she almost always says she has to rest for half an hour or so before she starts dinner. I don't yell at her. Instead, I tell her to take her time and just wake me when she gets dinner on the table. I generally have lunch at KFC so eating out is not reasonable. I'm ready for some home-cooked grub when I hit that door. She used to do the dishes as soon as we finished eating. But now it's not unusual for them to sit on the table for several hours after dinner.
I do what I can by diplomatically reminding her several times each evening that they won't clean themselves. I know she really appreciates this, as it does seem to motivate her to get them done before she goes to bed.
Another symptom of aging is complaining, I think. For example, she will say that it is difficult for her to find time to pay the monthly bills during her lunch hour.. But, Boys, we take 'em for better or worse, so I just smile and offer encouragement. I tell her to stretch it out over two, or even three days. That way, she won't have to rush so much. I also remind her that missing lunch completely now and then wouldn't hurt her any (if you know what I mean). I like to think tact is one of my strong points.
When doing simple jobs, she seems to think she needs more rest periods. She had to take a break when she was only half-finished mowing the yard. I try not to make a scene. I'm a fair man. I tell her to fix herself a nice, big, cold glass of freshly squeezed lemonade and just sit for a while. And, as long as she is making one for herself, she may as well make one for me, too.
I know that I probably look like a saint in the way I support Donna. I'm not saying that showing this much consideration is easy. Many men will find it difficult. Some will find it impossible! Nobody knows better than I do how frustrating women get as they get older. However, Guys, even if you just use a little more tact and less criticism of your aging wife because of this article, I will consider that writing it was well worthwhile. After all, we are put on this earth to help each other.

EDITOR'S NOTE: Pat died suddenly on July 31 of a perforated rectum. The police report says he was found with a Miken Ultra II jammed up his rear end, with barely 5 inches of grip showing, and a sledge hammer laying nearby. His wife Donna was arrested and charged with murder. The all-woman jury took only 10 minutes to find her Not Guilty, accepting her defense that Pat, somehow without looking, accidentally sat down on his bat

STRETCHING BEFORE A GAME? BAD IDEA!

According to an article in the News-Press stretching before a game may do more harm than good. Apparently "several studies in the past few years have found that static stretching before playing a sport makes you slower and weaker."

The article states that traditional stretches such as when people bend over and touch their toes or stretch their legs on a fence, often causes the muscles to tighten rather than relax-exactly the opposite of what is needed for physical activity.

Dr. Anders Cohen, chief of neurosurgery and spine surgery at the Brooklyn Hospital Center and former physician for the U.S. Tennis Open recommends warming up with a light jog or sport specific exercise to increase the heart rate and blood flow to the muscles, warming up the body temperature. "This allows you to approach your full range of motion, but in a very controlled way"

In the article Cohen states that elite athletes in all sports are increasingly ditching static stretching and using other warm-up techniques instead.

Kieran O'Sullivan an exercise expert at the University of Limerick in Ireland has studied various types of stretching and its effect on athletes and states in the article that stretching is still a valuable tool to increase flexibility, but should be done after a workout (or ballgame) or at the end of the day.

Winter 2010 Playoffs

On Tuesday night, Morgan Auto (3rd place finisher in the regular season) won the 2010 Winter Season play-offs with a 8-6 victory over Cape Coral 45+ .

In the preliminary round, CC45+ beat regular season champs Scappa Urology and Morgan defeated 2nd place finisher Sellstate Priority.

The draft for the Winter 2010 Season was held Tuesday night, January 5th, at Brooks Restaurant. There were 72 players available to make 7 teams of 10 players each and 2 preferred pool players.

We have a new sponsor this year- SellState Priority Realty (see the link on this page) and a new manager-Craig Simonson. We are always looking for new sponsors and managers so if you think you would like to give managing a try or know of a possible sponsor-contact a member of the Board.

The Board of Directors would like thank Kenny Wagner and Gary Wright for volunteering to manage at the last minute. Gary had planned to take a season off after managing for the last 6-7 seasons. But- he stepped up after Rob Sanders, who had planned to manage Morgan Auto this season, had to bow out at the last minute due to a scheduling conflict at work.

Kenny Wagner also stepped up to help out at the last minute after we needed to add another team. We are very grateful to Ken as this is not the first time he has volunteered to help out when there a shortage of managers.

The Play-offs for the 2009 Fall Season were held Tuesday night at the Sports Complex. The seedings were:

#1 Southern Trust vs #4 Morgan Auto

#2 Scappa Urology vs # 3 Pearl Lounge

In the semi-finals Pearl easily defeated Scappa 13-1 behind the tough pitching of Sante Cacciola and the steady fielding of 2nd baseman Mike Weaver. Gilbert Rivera and Bob Barth led the hitting attack for Pearl. The loss brought the the season to a close for the over-achievers of Scappa. They were led all season by Manager Mark Ridenour and center-fielder Tim Naughton.

Southern Trust rallied for 7 runs in the bottom of the 7th for a come from behind victory in the other semi-final. Morgan led this one 16-10 going into the bottom of the 7th when according to Morgan manager Jerry Roberts "the wheels came off". Tony Gargano singled to center with bases loaded and two outs to cap the Southern rally and put them in the championship. This set up a 1 vs 3 final.

In the Finals, Pearl Lounge outlasted Southern Trust for the Play-off Championship. The game went back and forth for seven innings until Pearl finally put the game away in the last inning. Pearl was led by crafty veterans Bob Johnson and John Svidron.

The Classic Logo's travel team, made up of players from our league, won the Winternational 50's AA Championship over the past weekend. The team went 4-1 in the tourney to bring home the gold.

CAPE CORAL MEN’S 45 PLUS SOFTBALL LEAGUE

RULES AND REGULATIONS

The Tuesday-Thursday 45+ Softball League is governed by a Board. The board will consist of the President, Vice President, Secretary, Treasurer and Directors. The board will not exceed nine (9) members. New Board Members must be approved by a ¾ vote of the Board. Cape Coral Parks & Rec. will have a non-voting representative on the Board.

THE LEAGUE WILL PLAY UNDER THE OFFICAL AMATEUR SOFTBALL ASSOCIATION RULES & REGULATIONS, UNLESS OTHERWISE STATED BELOW:

STARTING TIMES: Umpire’s and Managers will log in the official starting time before each game. The scheduled starting times will be determined by the Board. The second game starting time will be 5 minutes after the starting time or after the first game ends (If first game goes over time limit).

FORFEITS: A team must have 6 team players at 10 minutes before game time to draw pool players. Less than 6 players, the game will be a forfeit. A manager will be able to draw up to 3 pool players.

TIE GAME: All games will adhere to 1 hour and 15 minute time limit. When the game is tied after 7 innings and before the time limit, the teams will play 1 extra inning. At the start of the extra inning, each team will place the last batter of the previous inning on second base in their half inning. This runner cannot have a pinch runner until one batter has completed his turn at bat. Once an inning starts it will be completed.

PLAYER POOL: When a team has 6 or more roster players, the manager may select pool players. Managers are limited to three pool players, therefore a manager with 6 players can pick-up 3 pool players and would have to play the game with nine players.

a. The pool will start 10 minutes before game time. In the selection of pool players the manager who's team is lowest (6-5-4 etc) in the standings will pick first then second lowest etc until all the the pool is completed. If there are more pool players than needed, they will be narrowed to the amount needed by a draw of cards.

b. The manager must place his pool players at catcher, first base, or right field.

c. The first pool player chosen by a manager will bat last, second pool player will bat next to last, third pool player will bat third from last.

d. When a roster player shows up after pool players have been picked, he can play defense and bats after the pool players. The pool player becomes an EH for the rest of the game. A team may start with nine (9) team players and when there are no pool players, an out will not be charged.

PREFERRED POOL PLAYER’S: The league will make every effort to get each team pool players to bring their number of players to at least nine players. When a team has only nine players because there is a shortage of pool players, the opposing team will furnish a catcher to that team.

If a manager has nine players and there are pool players available he must get a pool player to bring his number to ten.

INJURED PLAYER’S: When a team has only 10 players and one player is injured and can not continue the game, that team can pick any available player present at that time. Every effort should be made to replace the injured player with a player of equal ability. That pool player can play in the injured player’s position or the next pool player position. The opposing manager must approve. When there no players available at that time, the opposing manager will furnish a catcher, until a player is available.

When an injured player will be out for more than 4 games, he will be replaced as soon as an available player of equal ability comes forward. When the injured player returns he will be placed on his original team, and the pool player will return to the pool. A majority vote of the board will decide replacements. Replacements going on a team of a board member, that board member will not have a vote.

UNIFORMS: Altering a shirt is not permitted. Handkerchiefs or kerchiefs are not allowed on the head. Pool Players are exempt from the shirt rule. NOTE: During cold weather, a jacket may be worn over the uniform shirt. However, the umpire may check during the game to see the shirt.

PLAYERS: All players must bat, unless injured. There will be no substitutions. All managers will see that all players in his line-up play at least half the game in the field. There will be 10 players on defense. Teams may have 10-12 players on their team roster.

COURTESY RUNNERS: Each team will be allowed 2 courtesy runners an inning. A player can only run once in an inning as a courtesy runner. Courtesy runners will only be allowed from 1st base. The courtesy runner is in the game when he touches the base. When the courtesy runner is on base when his time comes to bat, he will be removed and an out will be charged to the team. That courtesy runner will bat in normal batting order. Anyone on the team roster may be a courtesy runner. A pool player may not be a courtesy runner but may be ran for. Injured players must be listed on the lineup card but may not bat or play defense.

RUNNERS: A runner that goes into second base must slide or yield.

MERCY RULE: There will be a mercy rule of 20 runs after 4 innings or 15 runs after 5 innings.

SCHEDULES: There will be no make-up games for any reason.

THE MAT: The 45+ softball league will use a mat behind the original home plate. When a pitch hits either the original home plate or the mat it will be a strike. The league will use the 1 and 1 count on each batter with no courtesy foul.

DRAFT: Before each season the league will hold a player draft. The board will decide what round each manager will go in. The majority will rule. If a team sponsor is also a player, he will be placed on the team that he sponsors (if he wishes) and the board will decide which round that manager will pick that player.

The board will set the number of players on a team (10-11-12) before each season. All applications above the number set by the board will be placed in the preferred pool if they so request. The managers will hold a draft and pick 10-12 players, if available for each team.

QUITING: When a player notifies his manager that he is quitting, the manager may request a replacement player. A board member not associated with that team will verify the leaving of the player from the league. When a player quits he must wait until the next season to come back and may return only with approval of the Board of Directors.

NEW PLAYERS: All new players must show their driver license for age verification in order to play in the league. Players must turn at least 45 in the year in which they play.

MANAGERS: Each team manager or his appointed representative will determine the batting order and playing position of each of his players. The manager should try to play each player on his team on defense for at least 3 innings each game.

CASUAL PROFANITY: Casual profanity pertains to expletives and verbal un-sportsmanlike language not necessarily directed at an umpire or opposing players, but are most likely a player uttering them out of frustration.

a. This type of behavior is penalized by “outs” declared against the offending team.

b. Each team shall be given (1) warning, before being issued an “out”.

c. If the team is at bat and un-sportsmanlike words are used, the next batter will be called out.

d. If the act is committed by the defensive team, the first person to bat in the next inning will be called out.

e. The outs will be treated as a dead ball situation.

f. If the violation occurs in the bottom of the last inning, where the fielding team may not bat again, the ejection rule will be applied. If a team has an eligible substitute, they can continue the game. The team can also continue with 9 players -with an out being recorded each time for the ejected player(s) time at bat

g. A game may be ended by a casual profanity out.

h. All other verbal un-sportsman like language directed at umpires and/or opposing players should warrant an ejection.

SMOKING & DRINKING ALCOHOL: There will be no smoking on the playing field or team dugouts. No alcohol will be allowed on the Complex grounds.

DISPUTED CALLS: Only the manager or his designated representative (in his absence) will be allowed to question an umpire’s call.

FIRST BASE: When the batter-runner hits the ball and there is a play being made on him, he must touch the orange base or he will be called out. When the defensive player is on or blocking the double bag, the batter-runner does not have to touch the double bag. There will be no sliding into first base by the batter-runner.

THIRD BASE: Once a runner’s foot touches or goes beyond the commitment line, the runner may not return to third base. He is out if he does.

HOME PLATE: There will be a second home plate 8’ from the original home plate. The runner must touch the second home plate. If he touches the original home plate he will be called out. The catcher must be on the original home when there is a play at home. The catcher can not tag the runner after he passes the commitment line. When the catcher blocks or is on the second home plate the runner does not have to touch the second plate he will be safe. Any runner that slides at home plate will be called out.

PITCHER’S BOX: A pitcher’s box will be 6’ behind the pitching rubber and the width of the pitching rubber. The pitcher must have 1 foot within the pitcher’s box when he releases the ball.

HOME RUNS: There will be no limit.

WARM UPS: There will be no warm ups in the infield after the first inning.

LINE-UP CARDS: Teams must exchange starting lineups prior to the game. Lineups must be filled out properly with the player’s last name, first initial, team name, and date. The game will not start until the lineups have been exchanged and given to the umpire.

ALTERED BATS: Any player found using an altered bat during a league game may be banned from the league for a length of time (up to life) as determined by the Board of Directors. Altered bats would include those that are rolled, shaved and/or 'stepped on' (the shaft is weakened or bent to make it more flexible).

SCOREBOOKS: The home team will keep the official score book for the game.

RAINOUTS: The rainout number to call is 574-0595 after 5:30pm. Games will be moved to another park, if possible.

PROTEST: Must be filed by 4:00pm the day following the game being protested. The protest must be in writing, stating what rule and section from the Official Rules & Regulations and/or CCPR rules & regulations. The protest will not be accepted without a $25.00 cash deposit. Deposit will be returned only if the protest is ruled in favor of the team protesting. Protest must be brought to the League Office

EJECTION/SUSPENSION FROM OTHER LEAGUES: Any person or team ejected, suspended, sanction, barred, etc. from participation in any other league or sanctioning body (league) shall be likewise suspended from participation in all the City of Cape Coral Leagues until the suspension from the other leagues expire.

(a) This rule goes into effect immediately upon receipt by the league of a written

Or verbal notice of suspension by the suspending league.

(b) Any person or team playing in the league while suspended from another league is an illegal person or team, subjecting games played to possible forfeit. This is true only after the league has been notified of the suspension by the suspending league.

(c) No team or player is due a refund of league fees paid for any games not played due to suspensions.

(d) When one player is ejected for any reason, that player will be removed from that game and suspended for the next game that is played. (minimum) The game that player was ejected from, an out will be given when that player is due to bat. When 2 players are ejected that are on the same team, the game will end in a forfeit. The 2 players will be suspended for the next game that is played. (minimum)

SUSPENSIONS OR EXPULSIONS FROM THE CITY LEAGUE: Any behavior, which threatens any player, coaches, employee, or umpire by unsportsmanlike conduct. EXAMPLE: Throwing the bat or making verbal threats.

(a) Use of profane language.

(b) A person in an intoxicated condition.

(c) Physical contact with an umpire.

(d) Fighting with another player or spectator.

The above condition constitutes Ejection’s, Suspension’s or Expulsions.

LEAGUE CHAMPIONSHIP: Upon completion of the regular season, there will be a 4- team playoff for the championship. 1^st place vs 4^th place, and 2^nd vs 3^rd, with the winners playing for the championship.

In the case of a tie: the first tie breaker will be head to head results, the second tie breaker will be the least amount of runs scored against, and the third tie breaker will be the most runs scored.

A) The winner of the regular season will receive a sponsor trophy and tee-shirts or hats for each player.

B) The runner-up of the regular season will receive a sponsor trophy.
C) The winner of the Play-Off will receive a sponsor trophy.

During the play-offs the pool will consist of only those players chosen in the sixth round or higher ie: rounds 6-12 and from those teams not making the play-offs.

The board, along with the City of Cape Coral Parks & Recreation/Athletic Division will decide any and all situations that may arise, that are not covered in the ASA Rules and regulations or the League Rules.

PLAYER ASSISTANCE: Any player needing financial help to play in the league can receive assistance by a vote of the board
